Bega Valley Shire's coastline stretches over 223
kilometres which amounts to one eighth of New South Wales entire coast.
This coast line is known as the Sapphire Coast.
Lifeguards patrol seven beaches along the Sapphire Coast
between Bermagui in the north and Eden in the south. These beaches are patrolled every day
from Boxing Day to Australia Day.
Patrol hours are from 10am to 5pm.
Beachwatch
Program
Bega Valley Shire Council is among
four councils on the south coast of NSW who take part in the seasonal
beachwatch program. Beachwatch is a program which monitors the health of
local patrolled beaches over the summer period. Testing faecal coliforms
and enterococci, the bacterial indicators used to assess swimming water
quality.
The sites tested in the program are:

Ocean beaches: Camel Rock,
Horseshoe Bay, Short Point, Main Beach, Pambula Beach, Beares Beach,
Tathra Beach, Aslings Beach, Bar Beach and Cocora Beach

Lagoons/estuaries: Wallaga
Lake Bridge, Spencer Park, Mitches Jetty, Pambula River Mouth,
Cuttagee Point Inlet, Mogareeka Lions Park, Mogareeka Boat Ramp and
Back Lake

Pools: Bruce Steer Pool and
Big Blue pool
Bega Valley Shire Councils
Environmental Health Officer, Catherine Green, said monitoring was being
conducted by Council over the 2002-2008 summer seasons to provide the
community and visitors alike with information on beach water quality.
