Bega Valley Shire's coastline stretches over 223 kilometres which amounts to one eighth of New South Wales entire coast.  This coast line is known as the Sapphire Coast.

Lifeguards patrol seven beaches along the Sapphire Coast between Bermagui in the north and Eden in the south.  These beaches are patrolled every day from Boxing Day to Australia Day.  Patrol hours are from 10am to 5pm.

Beachwatch Program

Bega Valley Shire Council is among four councils on the south coast of NSW who take part in the seasonal beachwatch program. Beachwatch is a program which monitors the health of local patrolled beaches over the summer period. Testing faecal coliforms and enterococci, the bacterial indicators used to assess swimming water quality.

The sites tested in the program are:

  • Ocean beaches: Camel Rock, Horseshoe Bay, Short Point, Main Beach, Pambula Beach, Beares Beach, Tathra Beach, Aslings Beach, Bar Beach and Cocora Beach

  • Lagoons/estuaries: Wallaga Lake Bridge, Spencer Park, Mitches Jetty, Pambula River Mouth, Cuttagee Point Inlet, Mogareeka Lions Park, Mogareeka Boat Ramp and Back Lake

  • Pools: Bruce Steer Pool and Big Blue pool

Bega Valley Shire Councils Environmental Health Officer, Catherine Green, said monitoring was being conducted by Council over the 2002-2008 summer seasons to provide the community and visitors alike with information on beach water quality.
