Vessels begin sheltering in Twofold Bay.

1829

William Duggan Tarlinton explores Bega Valley.

1841

Bega district first mapped.

1849

Far South Coast’s first national school opens at Pambula.

1851

Severe floods result in the North Bega township development being moved to higher ground in Auckland Street, south of the river.

1856

Annie White opens the Victoria Inn in Auckland Street, Bega.

1857

First Bega race meeting held.

1858

First store in Bega (Yarranung) opened by Miss Otton, Post Office established in Bega.

1858

Tathra first used as a port.

1868

Maizena factory built at Merimbula.

1872

First Bega Show held.

1880

Bermagui gold rush.

1883

First operation of Green Cape Lighthouse.

1885

First Brogo bridge opened.

1885

Bega gasworks opened – first gasworks in Colony.

1889

Bega District Hospital opened.

1889

Brown Mountain Road (Cooma-Bega) completed.

1889

First Cobargo Show.

1891

Wallaga Lake Reserve established.

1899

Bega Co-operative Creamery Company formed.

1900

Quaama proclaimed as a town.

1901

First Bemboka Show.

1911

Wyndham Rabbit Canning factory opened.

1924

Bega War Memorial unveiled.

1952

Terrible bush fires in Bega Valley.

1957

Butler Air Transport lands first passenger plane at Merimbula Airport.

1959

Handcock Bridge opened at Mogareeka.

1971

Bega experiences worst floods on record.

1975

New Bega bridge opens on 29 September.

1981

Bega Valley Shire Council formed as an amalgamation of Imlay Shire, Mumbulla Shire and Bega Municipality.

1983

Wallaga Lake Aborigines the first in NSW to be granted title deeds under the 1983 Land Right Act.

1999

First meeting of Sapphire Coast Turf Club at Kalaru Race Course.
