Map of Shire

Dr George Mountain

Bellbirds chink in monotone.
Over granite monoliths
in valleys
waterfalls spill on tree ferns
and delicate maidenhair.

On The Diggings
black folk collect wood
for night-time fires.
"Rubbish," the forester said;
chain-sawing for the mill
he left residue.

Near shafts of the thirties
where white men sweated a fever
that was gold
a small family gathers left-overs.
