Thursday, February 2 : Smart’s
Labyrinth Australia (2010)
A portrait of one of Australia's
most important post war painters, Jeffrey Smart. Beginning at
Smart's enchanting villa at Urbino in Tuscany, he is embarking on a
portrait of fellow painter Margaret Olley. Progress of this painting
is traced throughout the film. He talks illuminatingly about his
distinctive style and subject matter and the meaning behind it.
Although his paintings of lonely figures set in bleak industrial
landscapes under dark brooding skies suggest early 21st century
decay Jeffrey, on the contrary, sees the post industrial society as
a thing of great beauty.

Thursday, March 1 : Kitchen Stories
Norway (2003)
Inspired by actual Scandinavian
post-WWII "home science" studies that tried to chart housework
efficiency through in-home observation. Swedish number cruncher
(Tomas Norstrom) camps out in the kitchen of a passive-aggressive
Norse curmudgeon (Joachim Calmeyer). He observes silently,
concocting flow charts every time his subject makes a cup of tea.
Gradually the two men break the rules of scientific purity and begin
to relate to each other. Inspired minimalism, colour perfect 1950's
set design and expert pacing yield a sweet, goofy story that
celebrates human connection, even in so unlikely a setting.

Thursday, April 5 : Dr Plonk
Australia (2007)
Set mainly
in 1907, this time-travelling satire tells the story of Dr Plonk, a
scientist and inventor, calculates that the world will end in 101
years unless immediate action is take. He must get to the future to
warn the PM in his ramshackle time machine. Assisted by Mrs Plonk,
his deaf mute assistant Paulus and Tiberius the dog, Dr Plonk might
just be able to do it. But just what proof of the future ahead will
convince Prime Minister Stalk? Directed by Rolf de Heer and starring
Magda Szubanski, this black and white, silent comedy is shot with a
hand-cranked camera and brims with romance, action and slapstick
comedy – not to be missed!
