Suggestions for doing Homework or Assignment in the Library

  1. BRING WITH YOU

To help the Library staff find the information you need, try to bring with you -

  • The question you wrote down

  • The work you copied from the blackboard

  • The printed sheet the teacher gave you

  1. ASK YOUR TEACHER

If you don't fully understand what you are expected to do, or are unsure how much you have to write.

  1. THINGS YOU MAY NEED

As it is not always possible to give you a book that you can borrow, be prepared to spend some time in the Library copying the information you need.  Therefore, come prepared with -

  • Pencils, pens

  • Paper

  • Photocopy money, in case you want to photocopy the information

  1. ASK THE LIBRARY STAFF

Don't be shy, come up to the Desk and ask the Library staff to help you find the information you need.In particular, ask to be shown -

  • How to use the Library Catalogue

  • The material in the Reference Collection

  • The material in the Pamphlet Files

  1. TELL YOUR PARENTS

Because it is not always possible to borrow the books you need, tell your parents that you may have to use materials in the Library and spend time sitting and working here.

  1. INTERNET

The Internet is available at the Library, but you must have parental permission to use it.  If you are under 12 years of age you need to have a parent with you. If you think that you might need to get information for your homework from the Internet -

  • Ask one of your parents to come with you

  • Make sure you book a time to use the Internet, so that it is free for you when you come in

  • Bring some money to pay for any information you print out

Ask the Library staff before using the Internet as the information you require could be in the Reference or Pamphlet File collections.

  1. DON'T WAIT

Come to the Library as early as possible after you are given the homework.  If you leave it until the last minute, everyone else will have borrowed the books.

·         Don't leave coming in to the Library until closing time.

·         Be prepared to spend time in the Library to get the information you need.

  1. BRING YOUR BOOKS BACK

Bring back any books you borrow as soon as you have finished your homework, so that others in your class can use them.  There is a limit on the number of books that you can borrow for assignments, so check with the library staff.

  1. THE HOMEWORK IS YOURS

Try not to have Mum and Dad or the Library staff do it for you.
