Council welcomes new Australian citizens
May 16, 2008: The Bega Valley Shire has welcomed nine new
Australians into the community.
The Australian Citizenship Ceremony was conducted by the Deputy
Mayor, Cr Janette Neilson, last week.
Those to join the Australian community as fully fledged citizens
were Joachim Weissegger of Cobargo, Sheila and Martin Cowley of Tura
Beach, Gary Rowlands of Merimbula, Robert Crewe of Pambula, Anthony
Hancock of Merimbula, Gary Capstick of Tura Beach and Georgina and
Roger Stroud of Merimbula.
Each recipient was presented with a Certificate of Australian
Citizenship as well as small gifts from Council and the Federal
Government.
Cr Neilson said choosing to become an Australian citizen was an
important expression of loyalty and commitment to our country.
"I am sure you will find in the months and years to come that
Australian citizenship is something to be valued and celebrated and
that this is a moment in your life you will look back on with
pleasure," she said.
Citizenship ceremonies are usually held in the shire on the first
Wednesday of each month, with special ceremonies conducted each
Australia Day.
New citizens are invited to take along family and friends to
participate in the ceremony and to join in afternoon tea following
the ceremony.
