Illegal Dumping at Merimbula

May 19, 2008: A large quantity of household refuse was found dumped Red Hill Road, Merimbula, near the Merimbula waste facility recently.

Bega Valley Shire Council Rangers attended the site following complaints from the National Parks and Wildlife Service and found that the person responsible had apparently parked a vehicle on the side of road and thrown the rubbish over the bank.

Ranger Mick Franic was able to trace the offender through evidence found in the dumped rubbish.

He was issued with a penalty infringement notice and ordered to clean up all the dumped rubbish.

Mr Franic said there had been an increase in dumping in reserves around the Shire and this was particularly the case around the landfills and waste management facilities.

He said the rangers’ team was continuing to focus its efforts on patrolling these areas and would prosecute any offenders identified.

The rangers would welcome any information from members of the community with respect dumping of waste, he said.
