Weeds Inspections in Burragate
May 30, 2008: Inspections for noxious weeds in
the Burragate area will begin on June 6.
Bega Valley Shire Council weeds officer Greg
Madden plans to inspect properties in the area and take whatever
actions are necessary to assist landholders and ensure that weed
control works are carried out.
"While I will be looking for any noxious weeds, I
will be targeting serrated tussock, African lovegrass and fireweed,"
Mr Madden said.
"Both African lovegrass and fireweed are recent
arrivals in the Burragate area.
"We want to work with local landholders and
Towamba Landcare to ensure they don’t become established
"Serrated tussock has been in the area for some
years but the efforts of locals have reduced the density and extent
and we want to see it fully controlled."
Weeds manager, Ann Herbert said Council hac been
working with the Landcare group over recent years and hac formed a
good working partnership that benefited the whole community.
"Our roadside and Crown Lands weed management
programs complement private work on properties in the area," she
said.
"The benefits of such a relationship can be
clearly seen in a general reduction in weeds but success requires
all local landholders to keep on top of weeds."
