Valve and Hydrant replacement program – Bega Water Supply System

June 5, 2008: Bega Valley Shire Council is about to commence a major valve and hydrant replacement program on Bega’s water supply system.

Council’s Water and Sewerage Services Manager Jim Collins said that the decision to complete another valve and hydrant replacement program is based on our need to maintain reliability and improve water quality for our customers.

"The work will commence on the 10th June 2008 and be completed over an eight week period.

"We will be using a two stage approach. The first stage is to replace all the strategic valves throughout the town. Some of these valves have been in the ground for many decades and their renewal will give far greater control of water flow within the system. These works should be completed within three weeks."

"Stage two works will follow straight away and involve replacement of many remaining old valves and hydrants."

The replacement program will take place between 9:00am and 4:00pm daily and will result in some interruption to water supplies. Customers will receive written advice two days prior to the work commencing in their area. Commercial customers will be provided with an alternative water source during the work period.

Mr Collins said that Council intends to work closely with the community to minimise disruption to water supplies.

People with inquiries regarding the work can contact Council on 6499 2222 or 6499 2320.
