Newspaper files at Bega Library
June 17, 2008: The Bega Valley Shire Library
has increased its newspaper microfilm collection to include the
Merimbula News Weekly on microfilm from May 11, 1988, to January 29,
1992, thanks to the generosity of the NSW State Library
This supplements the Library’s existing collection
of the MNW which was collected on microfilm from January 2004, along
with the Eden Magnet.
In addition, the library also received the Candelo
and Eden Union newspaper on microfilm from 1882 to 1904.
Due to missing original copies, this is an
incomplete run of the newspaper with a gap between 1890 and 1892.
The Southern Star is another local newspaper from
the turn of the 20th century and the library now holds it from 1900
- 1907 on microfilm.
The newspaper microfilm collection is held at Bega
Library and forms part of the local history collection.
Developing the local newspaper collection has been
a major focus for the library over the last few years with the
result that it is now a significant local history primary resource
for researchers, with newspapers going back to the 1860s.
In particular, the collection is now more
representative of the whole Shire.
