Council / News and Media / Media Releases / Major Projects / Towamba and Burragate Road Upgrade
The upgrade and sealing of the remaining unsealed sections of Towamba and Burragate roads are complete.
Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Russell Fitzpatrick said both roads are now fully sealed for their entire length.
“More than 22km of road has been upgraded and sealed, 7,800m of safety guard rail installed and about 3,000 guideposts located along the roadside” Cr Fitzpatrick said.
“This project has also involved roadside vegetation clearance, drainage works, environmental controls and additional regulatory and warning signage.
“The completion of these all-weather sealed roads will improve safety for the Towamba and Burragate communities and visitors alike.”
The project was primarily funded through a one-off grant of $10 million from Transport for NSW with some localised improvement works funded by Council.
Cr Fitzpatrick said the NSW Government’s investment, under Council’s project management, highlighted a joint commitment to safety on the shire’s roads and enhanced road services for the Bega Valley.
“This is a great result for our community as it improves transport links and road user safety during adverse weather conditions.”
GHD Pty Ltd was engaged to undertake site investigations, detailed design and project management of the upgrade project and Symal Infrastructure carried out the works, engaging numerous local contractors in the delivery of the project.
Road users are reminded that although the roads are now sealed, they are still winding and mountainous in many parts and road users should drive to prevalent road conditions.
