A long awaited plan to build a service road behind Club Sapphire in Merimbula has been agreed on by all parties.
The road will allow for a development application for the building of a new supermarket in the Main Street vacant land adjacent to Club Sapphire to proceed.
Mayor, Michael Britten said it was excellent news to have the green light to proceed with the next step in redeveloping a prominent commercial site in Merimbula.
“It has long been talked about that a major development will one day be built adjacent to Club Sapphire in Main Street,” he said.
“This is excellent news for Merimbula residents with the potential to attract major investment to the town now a possibility through an agreement to build a service road that passes behind the bowling club.
“The road is a vital component of any major development to the site as it will allow for customer and delivery traffic to access facilities from Sapphire Coast Drive.
“Following the signing of a Voluntary Planning Agreement by all stakeholders, including Council, Club Sapphire and Merimbula Nominees Pty Ltd, the next step is for the developer to engage a contractor to commence construction of the road and any associated works.
“Negotiations have taken place with a single tenderer and an agreement has been made to construct the service road for a sum of $1.2 million. This cost will be shared equally between the three stakeholders, with Council paying an additional amount for the moving of an underground water main.
“This is a great step forward for Merimbula, with a large scale development bringing valuable investment to the town as well as the benefits of improved traffic conditions, better access to shops and an increase to the town’s parking,” Cr Britten said.
