Support for recognition of Indigenous people

Wednesday 11 November 2015

Bega Valley Shire Council will write to Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull and local federal member, Dr Peter Hendy confirming Council's support to review and implement the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution.

The issue was raised in Council by Cr Kristy McBain who said the Australian Constitution, while written more than a century ago, fails to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the original custodians of our land.

“They are a nation of peoples who had lived on the land for more than 40,000 years, sustaining and evolving the oldest living cultures on the planet,” she said.

The full resolution is as follows:

Support for a referendum to recognise the indigenous people as the first inhabitants of our land
