The local community is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft Bega and Brogo River Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan after Council yesterday resolved to place the document on public exhibition.
Continuing until Sunday, 5 November, the public exhibition phase represents the extension of the ongoing conversation between Bega Valley Shire Council and those living and working in the Bega and Brogo River catchment areas on how to manage the risk of flooding in the area.
The project study area comprises the Bega River from Bega to Mogareeka (including Kalaru, Jellat Jellat and parts of Tathra); the Brogo River downstream of Angledale to Bega; and Candelo Creek at the village of Candelo.
Project Manager, Gary Louie, said the Bega and Brogo River communities had made a significant contribution to the draft study findings during the initial community consultation phase last year and Council was looking forward to continuing the positive momentum.
“A key component of the public exhibition period will be four community drop-in sessions planned for Bega and Candelo, which will include a project presentation and provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions, provide comments and assist with the preparation of detailed written submissions,” Mr Louie said.
“All community feedback gleaned from public exhibition period will inform the preparation of the final documents and with the study being prepared to meet the objectives of the NSW State Government's Flood Prone Land Policy, it will establish the basis for subsequent floodplain management activities.
Community Drop-in Sessions
- Friday, 20 October from noon – 2pm in the Bega Valley Shire Council meeting rooms (Zingel Place Bega).
- Wednesday, 1 November from 4.30 - 6.30pm in the Balawarn Room at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre (Zingel Place Bega).
- Thursday, 2 November from noon - 2pm in the Bega Valley Shire Council meeting rooms (Zingel Place Bega).
- Thursday, 2 November from 4.30 – 6.30pm at Candelo Hall (Williams Street Candelo).
The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and the Federal Ministry of Police and Emergency Services (MPES) are supporting Council by providing technical assistance and grant funding for the project through the Natural Disaster Resilience Scheme.
Submissions regarding the draft report can be made until Sunday, 5 November, via Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ page www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay. Detailed written and email submissions are also encouraged.
