Bega Valley Shire Council Coastal Management Programs

Since 2016 Bega Valley Shire Council, supported by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, have been developing a range of Coastal Management Programs to guide the management of our coastline. While we have made significant progress on these CMPs, due to legislative changes since the beginning of the projects we have temporarily paused to check and better align the work with the latest legislation. The projects will kick off again in 2021.

In the interim, Council is now required to prepare a whole of shire Scoping Study in line with Stage 1 of the Coastal Management Manual which will cover 225km of coastline and 29 estuaries. The Scoping Study will review current management, identify issues, determine what studies are needed to fill knowledge gaps, undertake a risk assessment to prioritise threats and prepare a forward program for preparing Coastal Management programs to guide future management of the coast and estuaries of the Bega Valley.

This website provides information on our Coastal Management Programs, details on upcoming events, and lets you know how you can get involved. Council are working with specialist consultants UNSW Water Research Laboratory to develop the Coastal Management Program for Coastal Hazards, as well as the Coastal Management Programs for Wallaga Lake, Merimbula & Back Lakes, and Lake Curalo. Council are also working with Elgin Associates to develop the new Coastal Management Program for Bermagui River.
