Coastal weeds project

This project helps to keep weed issues along our coastline under control and reduce litter along our beaches.

The Coastal Weeds Project commenced in 2007 and is now jointly funded by Bega Valley Council, Southeast Local Land Services, National Parks and Wildlife Services, Eurobodalla Shire Council and the Marine Estate Management Authority. The initial target species of the project were Bitou Bush and Seaspurge which have now dramatically reduced in numbers across the area due to the success of the project.

The project is delivered by Far South Coast Land Care, with a project officer undertaking two, 10 week duration sweeps a year along the entire Bega Valley and Eurobodalla coastline across all tenures with crews employed from local aboriginal land councils.

Due to the reduction in occurance of target species the group has been able to expand works deeper into the dunes and into our estuaries removing additional common coastal weed species including Beach Daisy, and various garden weeds which creep into our natural areas such as African Daisy and Polygala.

Through the assistance of the Marine Estate Management Authority, the collection of marine debris has also been added to the sweeps increasing the capacity of the program.

The data collected throughout this project helps to guide works and rehabilitation projects for both Council and local land care groups and helps to achieve the outcome of healthy and resilient dunes.
