Bega Valley Shire Council’s Young Women’s Grants are now open to local women aged 18 to 25, to mark International Women’s Day in 2023.

Council’s Director Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison said the grants aim to encourage inspirational young women across our shire to achieve their personal goals or to make a difference in their communities.

“There are 10 grants of up to $500 each available and applications can relate to a range of passion projects in arts and culture, environment, business, community, health and sport,” Ms Harrison said.

The theme for International Women’s Day in 2023 is Embrace Equity, calling on people to help forge a better, more inclusive, gender-equal world.

“If you know a young woman taking on a challenge, share this great opportunity with her,” Ms Harrison said.

“If you are that young woman, think about how this grant could help you challenge barriers that stand in the way of making positive changes.”

Former grant recipient Abbee Hausfeld-Suffern studied a Diploma of Counselling, with a goal of working in the community services or mental health sector. The funding went towards completing a first-aid course and mental health first-aid course. It also helped with art supplies for health and wellbeing workshops, and renting equipment to perform at free youth events.

Applications can be for individual initiatives as well as those that benefit others in the Bega Valley and surrounds.

Grant outcomes will be announced for International Women's Day 2023. International Women's Day, celebrated on 8 March each year, is a global day recognising the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Applications close on Monday 6 February 2023.

This grant is offered in partnership with the Mumbulla Community Foundation.
