Owners and managers of heritage properties across the shire have until 30 June to apply for funding under the latest round of Council’s Small Heritage Grants program.

Council’s Acting Director Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison said up to $5,000 was available for projects supporting heritage outcomes, with one grant of up to $2,500 available for a senior (pensioner or self-funded retiree) over 65 years of age.

“These grants are a critical part of Council’s support for private owners and community managers of heritage properties,” Ms Harrison said.

“The work they do to ensure our heritage is protected and preserved is invaluable, and we want to encourage and support this work to continue.

“There are many passionate and committed people who are doing amazing things to restore and conserve these important buildings, sites and conversation areas, and I’d encourage them to apply.”

Established by Bega Valley Shire Council and Heritage NSW, the grants provide funding support on a dollar-for-dollar basis to allow owners of heritage properties to carry out works to support the ongoing conservation and restoration of heritage buildings and sites across the shire.

A previous grant awarded to Eden’s St Mary MacKillop Museum has been used to replace rusted guttering.

Friends of Old Bega Hospital used their grant to complete the connection of stormwater downpipes on the Nurses Quarters to a stormwater junction.

A grant awarded to the owners of ‘Narroon’, an historic house in Bega built in 1895, has been used to treat and paint the building’s rusted roof.

Details of the Small Heritage Grants, including guidelines, are available on Council’s website.

It is recommended you discuss your project with Council prior to applying. Contact Jayde Rankin on (02) 6499 2330 or email grantsadmin@begavalley.nsw.gov.au
