Residents and visitors will be treated to series of activities to celebrate our local heritage, with a week-long celebration during the first week of September.

Heritage Near Me, which runs from Saturday 2 September until Saturday 9 September, is being hosted by the Office of Environment and Heritage in partnership with Bega Valley Shire Council, and a number of local community organisations.

There are many activities planned throughout the week with walks, tours, forums, and exhibitions all providing an opportunity for locals to take in and share our unique natural, Aboriginal and built heritage.

Manager of Community, Culture and Information, Simon Schweitzer, said Council has been amazed at the community’s support of this event and the number of heritage icons there are across the Shire.

“Our heritage contributes significantly to our local identity and showcasing it through these activities ensures its conservation for future generations,” he said.

The week-long celebrations will wrap up with an event in Little Gardens, Bega Biggah.

“Bega Biggah will be a meeting place garden, a garden of local Aboriginal heritage that represents Bunan Rings and includes plants of significance from dreamtime stories.

“It’s a great initiative and a fantastic end to what promises to be an exciting week of activities,” Mr Schweitzer said.

Details on each activity can be found in the full program on Council’s website www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au.
