Local environment a winner to the tune of $50,000
Eleven projects designed to restore and protect the local environment have received financial backing from Bega Valley Shire Council.

Eleven projects designed to restore and protect the local environment have received financial backing from Bega Valley Shire Council.
The fifth year of the Community Environment Grants has delivered $50,000 to eleven not-for-profit community groups from Bermagui to Bemboka to Pambula.
The program is funded through the Environmental Levy, and since 2011 has supported 44 projects worth $183,000.
“This year’s allocation is $10,000 more than last year, and signals Council’s enthusiasm for the work being done by the community,” said Michael Fiedler, Council Environmental Management Officer.
The aim of the program is to enhance, protect and restore the natural environment of the Shire.
“Some good is going to come of this, for example Far South Coast Landcare has been awarded $6000 to initiate an education program where school students will propagate native plants,” Mr Fiedler said.
Other successful applications include:
- The Old Bega Racecourse Management Committee, $5971 to develop a wildlife corridor between the Bega River and Anabranch.
- Pambula Wetlands and Heritage Project, $5500 to install education signage to promote awareness of the great range of bird species at Panboola.
- Bemboka Landcare Group, $3310 to construct steps leading up to the viewing area and information signs on the popular Colombo Creek walking track.
“When people talk about what they love about the Shire, the environment is one of the first things they say,” Mr Fiedler said.
“And the Community Environment Grants are one way Council recognises and respects that.
“We are grateful to ratepayers for their ongoing support of the program and encourage residents and visitors to get out and make the most of the special places the Grants highlight,” Mr Fiedler said.
