Entries for The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award have opened for 2018.
This biennial event, proudly sponsored by the Shirley Hannan Trust, is a celebration of realistic portraiture and attracts both established and emerging painters from across Australia.
Prior to her death in 2005, Mrs Hannan made it a prerequisite of the award that those works selected to hang depict their subjects accurately without abstraction and demonstrate a sound skill and knowledge of drawing and painting technique.
Bega Valley Regional Gallery Director, Iain Dawson, said The Shirley Hannan is well established as one of Australia’s most loved and richest portrait awards, with a non-acquisitive prize of $50,000.
“The Bega Valley regional Gallery is of course the spiritual home of the award which, as a cultural outpost in a small country town, is particularly proud to host such a significant and exciting event,” Mr Dawson said.
“We are consistently thrilled with the high quality and volume of entries, with past winners including Shaun Gladwell, Sally Robinson and Mathew Lynn, and this year promises to be no exception.
“It is the absolute highlight of our gallery program and I strongly encourage those who try their luck in the Moran or Archibald to take on this challenge as well.
“The finalists will be chosen by a selection panel of independent art professionals and the prize patron, Peter Hannan (son of the late Shirley Hannan),” Mr Dawson said.

Entries close at midnight on Friday, 28 September 2018.
The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award exhibition will run from 26 October – 8 December 2018.
