Bega Valley Shire Council is building opportunities by being an inclusive community, with the release of the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

General Manager, Leanne Barnes said, “Council recognises the work that needs to be done to achieve this but we are committed to taking a leadership role over the next four years to implement the plan and work with the community.”

The Plan identifies key focus areas for Bega Valley Shire Council:

  1. Developing positive community attitudes and behaviours
  2. Creating liveable communities
  3. Supporting access to meaningful employment
  4. Improving access to mainstream services through better systems and processes

“It is important that our Shire provides equal opportunity for people with a disability to fully participate in the life of our Shire, whether they are residents or visitors,” Ms Barnes said.

The Plan has been developed with the community particularly Council’s Access Advisory Committee, people like Committee Chair, Ron Finneran, a lifelong advocate for better access and inclusion.

“This is an important step forward for the Shire,” Mr Finneran said.

“It’s key though that people now take a look at the plan, it’s that firsthand experience navigating the Shire that will really help inform our actions.”

The Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan is available on Council’s website or from Shire libraries and the Zingel Place administration building. Comments close 14 June.
