In November, Bega Valley Shire Council, along with households, schools and community groups, will join hundreds of thousands of people as part of the national Garage Sale Trail—a powerful movement turning the problem of waste on its head.
Launched in 2010, the Garage Sale Trail has evolved from a grassroots initiative into a program embraced by hundreds of councils across the country.
Council’s Waste Education Officer, Rebecca Bruce said the Garage Sale Trail is a great opportunity to declutter, discover treasures, and make a difference on 11-12 November, and 18-19 November.
“The Garage Sale Trail mobilises communities throughout Australia to host and participate in garage sales on a designated day, meaning bargain hunters get masses of choice, and garage sale organisers get a lot of extra customers,” Ms Bruce said.
“Through being part of a national movement that’s as much about having fun as it is about making a serious impact on landfill dependency, people who get involved often end the day with money in their pocket, less clutter, and a different take on waste.
“It’s something that sparks a culture of reusing, strengthens community bonds, raises awareness about environmental issues, and ignites creativity.”
Ms Bruce said that businesses, community groups, neighbourhoods and individuals are all invited to take part in the Garage Sale Trail.
“So far we have garage sales registered by local Men’s Sheds, enterprising residents, and groups,” Ms Bruce said.
“Over the years, people have picked up thousands of bargains at local garage sales, and this can happen year-round at our Waste Transfer Station Reuse Shops in Eden, Merimbula, Wallagoot and Bermagui.
“It’s a chance for people to earn money and see their much-loved items find new homes—all without any cost, as participants keep every cent of their takings.
“Lots of people choose to boost sales by organising a street sale. This ups the fun factor as people make better connections with their neighbours.”
Whether you're a savvy shopper or someone looking to clear out your belongings, the Garage Sale Trail website at www.garagesaletrail.com.au is your gateway to a world of possibilities, and registration is absolutely free.
Registration is open to all households, local businesses, schools and community groups. The 2023 Garage Sale Trail is held across two weekends, on 11-12 November, and 18-19 November.
