Additional dog recreation areas declared
Bega Valley Shire Council has resolved to increase the number of areas where dogs can be exercised in parks and beaches in Tathra, Pambula Beach and Merimbula.

Bega Valley Shire Council has resolved to increase the number of areas where dogs can be exercised in parks and beaches in Tathra, Pambula Beach and Merimbula.
Council’s Director Community, Environment & Planning, Alice Howe, said additional areas were brought to Council by Councillor Mitchell Nadin and supported by a petition from residents asking for a review of the Companion Animals Control Areas Procedure.
She asked dog owners to take note of where their dogs are permitted and ensure they abide by the rules.
“We know people love their dogs and enjoy getting out with them in our parks and beaches,” Dr Howe said.
“But they also need to be mindful of their responsibilities as dog owners.
“Abiding by the on- and off-leash restrictions, being respectful of neighbours, keeping dogs under control, even in an off-leash area, and picking up and disposing of their waste are all critical to ensuring these areas are sustainable as dog recreation areas into the future.
“Dogs need to be kept at least ten metres from all children’s playgrounds and food preparation areas."
Dr Howe asked dog owners to take extra care and responsibility for their dog on the northern shore of the Bega River at Mogareeka.
“Dogs are still not permitted on the southern shore of the Bega River at Mogareeka where threatened shorebirds nest,” Dr Howe said.
“The northern side is now an on-leash only area. We ask dog owners to respect the advice of signage in the area around this important conservation work.”
Changes to the Companion Animals Control Areas Procedure are:
Tathra
- Lions Park (near Mogareeka), currently a dog prohibited area, to be changed to dog on-leash area;
- The old punt landing on the south west side of the Bega River, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog off-leash area;
- Mogareeka reserve, on the north east side of Bega River in the vicinity of Bay Drive, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog on-leash area;
- Kianinny Reserve, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog on-leash area.
Pambula Beach
- Pambula River mouth, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog on-leash area.
Merimbula
- Spencer Park, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog on-leash area.
- Bar beach, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog off-leash area except between 1 December to 30 April between 10.00am and 4.00pm when it is a dog prohibited area.
- Mitches Jetty, currently dog prohibited, to be changed to dog on-leash area.
