A great opportunity is approaching in mid-May with the Austswim teacher program coming to Pambula.

Instead of having to travel to Sydney or Melbourne which is normally the case, locals will be able to complete the two day course at the Sapphire Aquatic Centre and become a qualified swim teacher.

“This will really open doors for people, and the fact that you can do the training so close to home overcomes that added financial hurdle of travel and accommodation,” Leanne Webb, Aquatic Facilities Coordinator said. All smiles during water education at the Sapphire Aquatic Centre in Pambula.

“Mums, dads, grandparents and students are already qualified Austswim teachers, and find it a compatible fit with family life and other work or study commitments,” she said.

Completing the basic Austswim training is enough to start earning money and building a love and knowledge of the water for children.

Instructors earn between $21 and $26 per hour, plus casual loading and 9.5% superannuation, with demand for classes outstripping the number of teachers locally.

“There’s also great satisfaction in knowing that you are making kids and families safer around water,” Ms Webb said.

“We have around 700 children come into the Sapphire Aquatic Centre each week for classes and development programs, and we could put more through if we had the teachers.”

Ongoing training and mentoring would be part of your swim career with Bega Valley Shire Council, with further study options available taking in coaching and squad training and working alongside people with disabilities.

The two days of training are May 14 and 15, between 8:30am and 5:30pm, at the Sapphire Aquatic Centre in Pambula, cost is $405 payable to AustSwim.
