Painting returns to Bega for exhibition

A painting to be exhibited in the coming Flora Australis exhibition at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery has history in the area, says BVRG curator Iain Dawson.
A painting titled ‘Snapdragons’ by New Zealand born, Australian-educated painter Elioth Gruner was part of a travelling exhibition from the Art Gallery of NSW in 1953.
The exhibition “Still life and flower paintings by Australian artists” was exhibited not far from the new BVRG site, at the Bega County Council Exhibition Hall, Bega from 19 May to 2 June, 1953.
“If any residents have memories of attending the exhibition 63 years ago we would love to hear from them,” Mr Dawson said.
“It’s a stunning painting and we are thrilled it will be returning to Bega for this blockbuster show.
“Essentially, this exhibition is a very similar to the one in 1953 and comes from the same source, the Art Gallery of NSW collection.
“I do hope at least one person who saw the 1953 exhibition will contact me.”
Flora Australis will be opened on Friday 11 March at 6pm by Member for Bega Andrew Constance.
This is a free event, and everyone is welcome, particularly if they saw the exhibition in 1953!
The exhibition will continue until June 11, giving residents and visitors plenty of opportunity to view the exhibition.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to noon and entry is always free.
