Bega Valley Shire Council is asking ratepayers to take care when paying their bills online, particularly when entering the payment reference numbers.

Council’s Director of Strategy and Business Services, Lucas Scarpin, said a number of errors recently had resulted in payment being allocated to the wrong property.

“We have had a few instances lately of ratepayers not advising Council of the error until after recovery action has begun, causing unnecessary distress for the ratepayer,” Mr Scarpin said.

“Ratepayers who have made this mistake should contact Council as soon as possible.

“The longer the ratepayer leaves it to make contact, the more difficult it is to fix the situation as the rates on the affected property have not been paid.”
