Bega Valley Shire Council is inviting all residents to participate in a comprehensive community survey aimed at informing an update to the adopted long-term Waste Services Strategy.

Council’s Waste Services Coordinator, Tim Cook said an updated Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy will reflect progress towards achieving existing objectives, ensuring its relevance for the future.

“The services we offer are intricate, requiring a delicate balance of community awareness, operational activity and asset management to achieve strategic outcomes,” Mr Cook said.

“Our everyday activities are subject to stringent federal and state regulations, necessitating a robust strategy to guide our waste and resource management today and into the future.”

Mr Cook said the priority is to engage with customers because the key objective of the updated strategy is to align Council services with community needs and expectations.

“We took the first steps last year by establishing a Community Working Group. This group is now up and running and has met twice already to help us plan the strategy update,” Mr Cook said.

“The next step sees us casting our net much wider to establish a view of how the broader community uses and rates our services.

“We’re running an online survey until 15 May to get a current and real view of how well our services are performing.

“Whether you are a tenant, a rural-based customer who visits a transfer station once in a while, or someone living in town with a bin collection service, we encourage everyone who uses our services to complete the survey.

"Great strategies start with a broad identification of needs and capacities and the feedback we receive now will strongly influence the effectiveness and outcomes of our strategy.”

Mr Cook said the current strategy needs revising to adapt to evolving priorities, funding dynamics, and legislative requirements.

"Much has changed since 2018," he said. "Effective waste management is now more critical than ever, and our strategy must evolve to address shifting paradigms and the pressures of everyday living."

“The new strategy will be transparent in its development, with the community looped in again once it’s drafted and placed on public exhibition.”

Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and share their valuable insights to shape the future of waste management services in Bega Valley.

Council staff will also be present at a number of community events and markets throughout March and April to offer the survey and discuss the project.
