Bermagui Harbour Boat Ramp Upgrade
To upgrade the boat ramp, pontoon and carparking area at Bermagui Harbour and to improve the overall use of the site.

Project Summary/background
The Bermagui Harbour Boat Ramp Upgrade project includes:
- replacement of the existing boat ramp with a new three-lane reinforced concrete boat ramp
- new pontoon to improve accessibility and capacity
- existing pontoon to be retained
- road line-marking the carpark area to improve manoeuvring
The project will be designed and constructed within environmental and heritage regulations
Purpose
The overarching purpose of this project is to improve the standard of this recreational boating facility, utilised by locals and visitors alike.
The Bermagui Harbour Boat Ramp is one of the Bega Valley Shire Council’s busiest boat ramps with hundreds of boating users visiting the region to take part in fishing competitions or to enjoy the fabulous waters off Bermagui.
Noting the popularity of this facility, it is Council’s intention to improve its function and safety and to provide the most up to date facilities to encourage improved use and visitation to the region.
Funding
Total project funding: $1,233,615
- Transport for NSW contribution: $993,605 via the NSW Boating Now Program
- Bega Valley Shire Council contribution: $240,009
Connection to Council's Community Strategic Plan
Feedback from the Bermagui area in response to the ‘Understanding Our Place’ community engagement process, which subsequently informed the Community Strategic Plan (CSP), included ‘improved recreation facilities and spaces’. This feedback links to CSP Outcome 1 Active and Healthy Communities; specifically, the second goal of this outcome of ‘access to good quality recreation and sporting facilities’.

The concept design for this project is attached for your information. Council has liaised with key stakeholders within the Bermagui fishing and boating community to develop this concept design to ensure that what is being designed will best serve the boating community.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Bermagui River boat ramp be closed? If so, for how long?
Yes. The boat ramp will be closed during construction of the upgraded facility, from Monday 26 June to late-August 2023.
What works will be carried out?
The project includes the following works:
- Replacement of the existing boat ramp with a new reinforced concrete boat ramp
- New pontoon to improve accessibility and capacity
- Road line marking in the carpark to improve manourability
Which community stakeholder groups were consulted in developing the concept plan?
Key stakeholders within the Bermagui boating and fishing community have been consulted on the draft Concept Design.
The stakeholders included members from the following groups:
- Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club Inc
- Bermagui Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Inc
- Bermagui Harbour
- Private industry representative involved in the fishing/boating sector
- Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee.
Where can I launch my boat while the Bermagui Harbour boat ramp is unavailable
While the works are underway, people are asked to launch their boats at the Bermagui River boat ramp, approximately 1.5 km away. Please note ocean access can be limited by bridge clearances.
Who will be undertaking the project work?
Contractors, GPM Marine Constructions will carry out the works.
How will the project be funded?
The project is jointly funded with Transport for NSW contributing $660,122 through their NSW Boating Now program and Bega Valley Shire Council contributing $220,040.
How will the parking area change?
Line marking will be incorporated to improve traffic flow and delineation of parking spaces and pedestrian paths.
Will pedestrians or cyclists still have access to the area?
It is unlikely that pedestrians and cyclists will have access to the boat ramp and pontoon areas during construction of the upgraded facility.
It is anticipated that pedestrian and cyclist access to the Bruce Steer Pool will continue during the construction period with the Bruce Steer Pool remaining open during this time.
