Owner responsibilities The Companion Animals Act 1998 provides for the identification and registration of companion animals and for the duties and responsibilities of their owners. A brief outline of these responsibilities follow.
Registration of Dogs and Cats All dogs and cats born after the 30th June 1999 must be microchipped prior to a change of ownership or before the animal is 12 weeks old, whichever comes first and registered at six months of age.
Rules and regulations Enforced regulations - Council has a variety of authorised officers who will enforce the provisions of the Companion Animals Act 1998 and Companion Animals Regulation 1999.
Where is your cat now? Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 cats must be micro-chipped and registered. Keeping registration details up-to-date is important in case your cat is ever lost as it enables you to be reunited with your cat.
