Public Interest Disclosure

Bega Valley Shire Council takes reports of wrongdoing seriously. We are committed to building a culture where elected officials, staff, volunteers, and contractors are supported to report any conduct they reasonably believe involves wrongdoing.

When you make a report of possible wrongdoing your report is considered a ‘public interest disclosure’ if it has certain features which are set out in the PID Act. The features are:

• • It is about serious wrongdoing or misconduct
• • Your report is made voluntarily
• • Your report is made because you have a legal obligation to report it
• • Your disclosure has been made as part of an investigation into serious wrongdoing, and you have been requested to provide information to the investigator

Once a report is received, we will look at the information included to see if it has the features of a voluntary PID. The assessment will identify what type of disclosure you have made. It will also help us make sure we are taking the right steps in response to your report.
