Code of Meeting Practice

The Local Government Act 1993 determines the general rules of Council Meetings. It specifies the role of the Mayor, Councillors and Chief Executive Officer and includes requirements such as the:

  • public access to meetings
  • number of meetings that must be held during the year
  • minimum number of Councillors that must be present to hold a meeting (quorum).

Council updated and adopted it’s Code of Meeting Practice on 10 June 2026. The Code determines the rules specific to Bega Valley Shire Council's meetings. It includes procedures for the general conduct of speeches, petitions and matters such as motions, amendments and confidentiality.

Our Code is based on the Model Code of Meeting Practice issued by the Office of Local Government as an instrument of the Local Government Regulation 2021.
