Bega Valley Shire Council is proud of the role it plays in developing skills and capability across the community through its Cadetship, Traineeship and Apprenticeship programs. These opportunities are part of the Council’s four-year workforce planning cycle, with recruitment conducted according to standard merit-based processes. Positions are offered throughout the year and vary based on operational needs.

Council’s early-career programs provide young people with structured pathways to local employment, skills development and long-term workforce capability. Trainees, cadets and apprentices contribute to a vital skills base that supports the sustainability and growth of local businesses and industries.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Apprenticeships and Traineeships provide the opportunity to earn an income while completing formal study and gaining hands-on skills. Anyone eligible to work in Australia is welcome to apply.

Examples of qualifications we support include:

  • Certificate IV in Business Administration
  • Certificate IV in Library Services
  • Certificate III in Water Services
  • Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication
  • Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
  • Certificate III in Construction Carpentry
  • Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology

Cadetships

Cadetships are full-time roles that combine part-time university study with practical work experience across several Council departments. The number and focus areas change each year to meet operational needs.

Examples of cadetship qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Commerce – Business and Governance
  • Bachelor of Natural Science – Community, Environment and Planning
  • Bachelor of Communications – Community, Environment and Planning
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) – Assets and Operations

Success Stories

Thomas Donnelly – Heavy Vehicle Mechanic

Thomas completed his three-year apprenticeship with Council, achieving a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology through Canberra CIT and has since secured employment as a qualified heavy vehicle mechanic with a local business. During this time, he worked within the Fleet Facilities workshop and was supported by an experienced team.

Zane Bagley – Current Apprentice

Zane is currently undertaking a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology as part of his apprenticeship with Council.

“It’s supportive learning from a team who know what they are doing. I’ve learned so much already and am looking forward to developing even more skills.”

Council’s cadet, trainee and apprentice positions are an essential element of Councils long-term workforce planning. These roles help develop skilled professionals, strengthen local employment and support the ongoing sustainability of industry and business throughout the region. This approach provides Council with additional workforce capacity when required, creates valuable job opportunities for young people and contributes to the development of skilled employees who continue to support the region, within Council and across the wider business community.
