New Local Infrastructure Contribution Plan adopted

Bega Valley Shire Council has adopted a revised plan to fund the infrastructure needed to support future growth across the shire, including in the rapidly growing village of Wolumla.

The updated Bega Valley Local Infrastructure Contribution Plan endorsed at this week’s Council meeting sets out how developer contributions will be collected and used.

Director Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison said the plan ensures new development contributes to the infrastructure needed to support growing communities.

“As our population grows, so does the demand for roads, pathways, parks, community facilities and other essential infrastructure,” Ms Harrison said.

“The contribution plan is expected to generate approximately $30.7 million towards local infrastructure projects over its life, helping to fund works with an estimated total value of more than $175 million.

“This helps to ensure that development contributes towards the cost of the infrastructure needed to support the growth it brings, rather than placing the full burden on existing ratepayers.”

The updated plan builds on the adopted Wolumla Structure Plan, which identified capacity for up to 1,096 additional dwellings in Wolumla over time.

“We know that Wolumla is one of the shire’s key growth areas and the updated plan includes provisions to help fund the infrastructure that will be needed as the village expands over the coming decades,” Ms Harrison said.

“Some of the money collected from development in Wolumla will go towards priority projects in the village, with the rest helping fund infrastructure that benefits the wider shire.

“Previous community feedback identified a range of infrastructure needs in Wolumla, including road and intersection upgrades, pedestrian and cycle links and new bus stops and school crossings.

“It also highlighted improvements to parks and recreation areas, community facilities and streetscapes.

“While Wolumla has been identified as a key growth area, the Local Infrastructure Contribution Plan applies to development across the entire shire, ensuring growth helps fund infrastructure where it is needed most.”
